AI-POWERED INSPECTION AND MONITORING FOR STEEL WIRE ROPES

This paper introduces a study on an advanced technology for the inspection and monitoring of steel wire ropes. The proposed methodology integrates state-of-the-art Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) with computer-based visual analysis enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to automatically localize surface defects and compute accurate geometry of steel wire rope. By combining the MRT’s capability to detect internal discontinuities and metallic cross-section loss with automated visual detection of wear, corrosion, and other surface anomalies, the approach enables a comprehensive evaluation of rope integrity. Extensive experimental investigations conducted in laboratory settings, on test benches, and under real operating conditions confirm the technological feasibility of the system and demonstrate its potential to significantly enhance safety standards in cableway applications.
