Aeroplane versus rope - What happened?

ln France about 30 years ago, and just recently in Italy, the failure of a ropeway rope from being hit by a plane resulted in a terrible accident as a full gondola fell to the mountain below, whilst the pilots managed to continue their flight and to land. Are there regulatory precautionary aspects and scientific explanations to consider?
